Energy Audits- FAQ: What About Missouri Specific Tax Incentives?

Beginning 2009, specific tax incentives are available to Missouri taxpayers: they can claim an income tax deduction on their individual returns for the costs of obtaining a home energy audit and implementing the energy efficiency recommendations contained within the audit.*  The deduction is capped at $1,000 per year or $2,000 cumulatively over multiple years.  The Missouri tax incentives are available, over and above the Federal incentives.

In order to be eligible for the Missouri tax deduction, the home energy audit must be performed by an auditor certified by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  Decent Energy’s President, Barry Dicker is certified as a Missouri Home Energy Auditor by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

For additional details on Missouri specific deductions see the Missouri Department of Natural Resources web site at

We provide our Missouri home energy audit customers with a copy of the appropriate application in connection with re-testing a required re-testing of residence upon completion of the improvements.

*(Note- Whether a specific deduction is available to you and how it impacts your overall tax situation is something that is best left to discussion with your CPA or other tax advisors.)
